Village Square

The newly raised flowerbeds have been planted as part of a community planting day involving the Hope Centre Nursery, Positive Futures, City College Horticulture students, Neighbourhood Wardens, the Hillfields Gardening Club and other local residents. Eight hanging baskets have also been fixed to the outside of WATCH. The project has been named as Best Urban Project at the 2006 Environment Agency Action Earth Awards. It came top in the City Slickers category.

Andy, a local resident in Hillfields said:

The one thing that makes the difference to the Hillfields village square is that the work conceived by the Environment Action Group has been maintained by the Gardening Club which was set up by WWT, this means the square is constantly cared for, and not just a "one off" project that withers away.

Eileen, a local resident in Hillfields said:

It's colourful, cleaner, tidier and brighter than before.
