The Growth Project at Leigh Street Allotments
Leigh Street Allotments is a horticultural therapy project in partnership with the Asian Community Mental Health team who work on the allotments every Friday. Through public funding, the group were able to create raised beds and a pathway, and to buy tools and a tool store. They also hold a summer BBQ every year for their partners, patients and carers. The project is in the process of working with them to help secure funding to build the rest of the path, buy seeds and carry out further improvements to the site. Hope Centre nursery has recently started working on one of the plots for children to experience growing vegetables. Since they do not have garden spaces at the nursery, this will give them a great opportunity to learn about nature.
Linda, the manager of the Hope Nursery said:
The nursery has been using the allotment for a few months now, and the staff and children are enjoying the outdoors. We are growing our own vegetables and flowers. The children are fascinated with the mini beasts that are on the allotment. As we have no garden space at Hope nursery we are really appreciative of the safe space the allotment offers.
