Pollution of River Anker
Warwickshire Wildlife Trust is concerned for local wildlife
following the fire at a Nuneaton company yesterday.
Peter Thorne, the Trust's Conservation Officer for Nuneaton said
"All species are sensitive to pollution; the numbers of fish dying
will have an impact not only on the River Anker eco system but
other tributaries and wetlands as the pollution is carried down
stream. Fish are usually the first casualty in an incident like
this but as many other species rely on fish as a food source they
too could be affected, such as species like Otters, King Fishers,
or Heron that are present in this area. We hope that any clear up
can be undertaken quickly and efficiently and we will work with
both the environment agency and the local community to limit any
lasting effects."
The Trust is currently working with partners to put finishing
touches to a plan that will enhance and protect all rivers and
wetlands across the North of the County and hopes to work to see
the return of many species like Water Vole.
