Surveys and Monitoring

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust carries out regular surveys, firstly of particular species to make sure our management work is benefiting them, and to monitor climate change and secondly of habitats and land use as part of the Habitat Biodiversity Audit.

We need volunteers to help us survey everything on our Nature Reserves, including butterflies, birds, bats, otters, flowers and much more. The surveys can be carried out at one nature reserve or at several depending on how much time you have to spare. The survey season is usually March - September depending on species. It is beneficial if you are available throughout the survey season of your chosen species so that we can obtain complete records. However, times and days for surveys are flexible and can fit in around when you have the time and records from a single visit are also welcomed.

If you are interested in helping us collect data on our Reserves there are a number of options available to you depending on your interests, level of expertise and availability. All levels of experience are required as full training in identification is provided if you need it. Dates for Surveying workshops, run by the Trust, can be found in our Events Guide.

The simplest form of survey you could carry out is to record general sightings by completing a survey through this link: General survey.

Alternatively you can download and use the following forms:

If you would prefer to submit your data any other way then please bear in mind the basic information required is:

Recorder's name and contact details (phone number, address, and email).
Species name (ideally scientific name as well as common name)
Reserve name
Location (6 or 8 figure National Grid reference)
Date (ideally day/month/year, but just month and year is acceptable)
Estimates of number or abundance

Comments are also useful.

If you would like to participate in a more structured surveying and monitoring then please let us know what your specialist interest/expertise is in (e.g. plants, birds, reptiles...).

Please contact caroline.temple@wkwt.org.uk for further information
