White Paper on the Natural Environment

The new government has announced its proposals for a white paper on the Natural Environment. This provides a real and superb opportunity to lay the foundations for nature conservation in the 21st century - and The Wildlife Trusts can take a huge amount of credit for persuading politicians of the need for this.

Stephen Trotter, Chief Executive of Warwickshire Wildlife Trust said:

"I welcome the preparation of a White Paper for the Natural Environment. This could make a massive difference; both for local wildlife and for the benefit of people and local communities in Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull. With a new vision, we can create a living landscape in which people and wildlife can thrive together. This White Paper could be the catalyst for a major change in how we look after the environment, wildlife and wild places at a critical moment in our history. Future generations will not thank us if we fail - it's an opportunity not to be missed!"

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust thanks its members and supporter for their responses to the White Paper

Dear members and supporters,

The much anticipated Natural Environment White Paper was published on Tuesday 7 June 2011. This marks the culmination of effort, pressure and engagement from The Wildlife Trusts and its members on Government to recognise the need to make the natural environment a priority. However, this pivotal moment just marks the first step of the journey on nature's road to recovery.

In the build up to the 2010 General Election, The Wildlife Trusts called for a White Paper on the Natural Environment to identify the policy changes needed for nature's recovery. We were delighted when the Coalition Government committed to produce a White Paper, the first for over 20 years. A consultation over the summer 2010 resulted in Defra receiving more than 15,000 responses - the most a Government White Paper has ever received!

The Wildlife Trusts' members were fundamental in demonstrating to the Government just how much people value their natural environment and that nature is worth protecting and restoring. Thank you for your engagement so far - it has made all the difference.

Best Wishes,

Stephen Trotter, Chief Executive
