Local Training Initiative Succeeds as Participants Find Dream Jobs

A training course in Conservation Skills run by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust in partnership with Kingsbury Water Park , funded by North Warwickshire Borough Council Well Being Fund was run earlier in the year to help local unemployed people find the kind of work they really wanted to do.

The 8 week course provided training in pond creation and management, habitat management, footpath maintenance and fencing.  Since the completion of the course 66% of the participants have gone on to work in the environmental field or gone into further environmental training in colleges and universities.

Heather Ball completed the 8-week course in February 2007 “I enrolled on the course to gain practical experience.  I’m studying for a BSc in Environmental Studies but I know I will need practical work experience to enable me to get an environmental job.  The course helped me gain some practical skills, which together with my degree will help me get into conservation work in the future.  I enjoyed it so much that after the course I continued volunteering with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.”

Luke Warburton explained how the course helped him,   The course I have undertaken was really useful; it gave me the opportunity to improve my practical skills in nature conservation, which I have been implementing in my job. Working in nature conservation is what I have always wanted to do, but I didn’t have much technical knowledge; these types of courses are a great opportunity to develop hands-on skills”.

The success of the course has inspired Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to develop another conservation skills training course which will run from April 2008 to September 2008.  These workshops will be advertised in the new year or see website for details www.warwickshire-wildlife-trust.org.uk
