WOOD WHITE BUTTERFLY PROJECT OFF TO A FLYING START

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust with a grant of £4,200 from the Carillion Natural Habitats Fund have initiated a new project in Ryton Wood focused upon the rare wood white butterfly.

The project, titled ‘Lavishing Conservation Care on the Lady of the Woods’ will regenerate the woodland habitat and provide opportunities for people to become involved in the woodland’s management.

Ryton Wood Site of Special Scientific Interest, near Princethorpe, is one of the finest woodlands in the county and home to 33 species of butterfly, including the threatened wood white butterfly, a species identified for action in Warwickshire’s Local Biodiversity Action Plan.

The grant from Carillion will enable Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to manage the woodland for butterflies by creating areas of young tree growth next to wildflower rich grassland within the wood. Blocks or ‘scallops’ of the woodland will be cut alongside grassland rides.  This encourages the growth of food plants such as greater bird’s foot trefoil and vetches in sunny open conditions within the woodland.  The grant will also mean a woodland open day for the public can be held in October, along with Introductory Conservation Events where the public will be invited to participate in the management of the wood.

Eddie Asbery , Warwickshire Wildlife Trust’s Woodland Project Officer, said “Ryton Wood is one of the most amazing woods in the county and a special place for wildlife.  The Carillion grant will enable essential work to be carried out to benefit the wood white butterfly; this management will also benefit other flora and fauna.  This project is a great outcome for the Princethorpe Project and will mean a population of butterflies can colonise in to the surrounding landscape.  Dates will be announced in the near future inviting people to events where they can become involved in the management of the wood.”

Louise Rhydderch, Carillion plc’s Group Sustainability Programme Manager said ” We are delighted to support Warwickshire Wildlife Trust with such a worthy project of conservation. The Lady of the Woods project contributes to our commitment to the Wildlife Trusts through the Carillion Natural Habitats Fund which has now successfully been running for seven years.”
