June 2008…………...For Immediate Release
AFFORDABLE
HOUSING FOR OTTERS
The
Mayor of Rugby, Cllr Bill Sewell, may only have been in office a matter of
weeks but he is already declaring his ‘green’ credentials beyond the
four walls of the Sustainable Environment Committee Room by joining in
with one of Warwickshire Wildlife Trust’s weekly Nature Force Work
Parties.
On June 26th, the Mayor will be giving the Nature Force team of
volunteers, led by Eddie
Asbery Woodland Project Officer a hand with building an otter holt on a
river in Warwickshire.
The artificial house which is made out of re-cycled plastic creates
an artificial home in a similar way as a bird box.
The decline in natural habitat along with increases in chemicals
used in industry and farming lead to a decline in Otters throughout the
United Kingdom
. However,
thanks to tightening of laws and changes to modern farming methods the
Otter population is on the increase.
Staff and volunteers at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust have been
working hard to help map their distribution in the county and now as a
result are creating a number of artificial Otter holts (houses) to help
these wonderful mammals survive.
Ian
Jelley, Reserves Volunteering Officer at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust says,
“Our Nature Reserves are ever-popular with people wanting to take a
break from the hurly-burly of their everyday lives and to make sure that
the Reserves remain equally attractive to their wildlife residents and
human visitors alike, we have a rolling maintenance and monitoring
programme running throughout the year. Much of this work is a
behind-the-scenes effort by our dedicated volunteers, so it’s great that
the Mayor of
Rugby
is coming along to join in with our work. I’m sure that his experience
today will inform and enhance the decision-making processes of the
Sustainable Environment Committee.”
