2008…………...For Immediate Release
HOPPING MAD
On Saturday 16 August
and Sunday 17 August Warwickshire Wildlife Trust invites you to join in
with one of our regular work parties, or to come to Ufton Fields SSSI to
monitor its grasshopper and cricket populations.
On Saturday
16 August at 10.00 am:
Join
volunteer warden Steve Godfrey for a practical work party helping to
manage the River Arrow Local Nature
Reserve in Alcester. Please
meet in the car park on
Ragley Mill Lane
(SP 088 580)
On Sunday
17 August at 10.00 am:
Join
volunteer warden Dave Solliss at
Hampton
Wood, Barford to work in this
beautiful ancient woodland and its associated water meadows alongside the
River Avon. Meet at the
entrance [grid reference SP254600] on the Sherbourne to Hampton Lucy road.
These events are free
and full training will be given.
On Sunday
17 August at 11.00 am:
Join Kay
and Peter Reeve at Ufton Fields SSSI for a gentle exploration of this
wonderfully varied reserve to find and identify the grasshoppers and
crickets which live there and which, at this time of year, should be out
in force. Make a day of it and bring a picnic lunch.
COST:
£2.00 per person
For
each event, all you need to bring is appropriate weatherproof clothing and
strong footwear.
Ian
Jelley, Reserves Volunteering Officer at Warwickshire Wildlife Trust says,
“Nothing conjures up the vision of lazy summer days more than the
zithering of grasshoppers and crickets in the long grass – except,
perhaps, listening to Mungo Jerry’s 1970 hit, ‘In the summertime’.
Our northern summers are incredibly short, so come and make the best of
this one by spending a Sunday in the company of experts, monitoring the
most athletic of insects.”
