Warwickshire Wildlife Trust   Leam Valley Restoration Project
Go back to the Homepage
This ambitious project aims to restore an extensive area of wetland habitats along the River Leam, near Newbold Comyn in Leamington Spa.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Environment Agency, Warwick District Council and Biffaward (through the Landfill tax Credit Scheme), the project first involved a feasibility study followed by local community consultation.  Following these, a masterplan was developed in partnership with Middlemarch Environmental, which involved removing an area of plantation from the floodplain, and the excavation of hundreds of cubic metres of silt and earth to create a new landscape.

The area has been planted with a range of marsh plants and wetland trees, and will colonise naturally over the next few years.  On 25 September 2001 a new bird-hide was officially opened, and new paths and signs will be installed over the coming months.

Feel free to visit and watch this unique restoration as it happens, with new species colonising and wetland nature coming back to Leamington Spa.  Click on any of the photos below for a larger image.
